identity /god's covering over us/ serve god only
matthew chpt 4
satan tempted god in three areas.
firstly satan attached jesus belief in his own identity and ability.
If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.
in this conditional clause, satan tests jesus' belief in his identity as son of god, and challenged him to proved that he is one by using his ability.
in our own lives, do we know our identity in god? are we a teacher? a child of god? a mother? on what do we base our identity?
do we need to prove our identity?
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”[a]
jesus replied that he does not need to change the stone to bread cos he does not need the bread but he needs god.
in the same way, we do not need our occupation to define who we are, our children to define who we are, we do not need anything to define who we are, cos we are defined by the word from god's mouth.
and god says we are the apple of his eye, god says his eye is always on us, god says we are the redeemed, god says he knew us even before the world began.
god says we are precious to him.
If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘ He shall give His angels charge over you,’
and, ‘ In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’”
the second area which satan challenged jesus is god's love and protection over jesus. he tried to challenge jesus ' belief in god's love provision and protection over him.
does satan make us doubt in this area too? satan knows how precious we are to god and he makes us doubt in this area?
perhaps satan knows that if we are secure in this fact, we can be such conquerors in christ?
jesus' response is It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’
i think another word for tempt is test. jesus says there is no need to test the Lord who is our god cos there is no question in his provision and love for us.
there is no need to test him at all.
in our lives, do we live in such a way that reflect this absolute trust in the lord our god? or do we live in fear and insecurity, not realising and believing that the Lord is watching over us?
showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”
satan claimed the tangibles for his own. god's kingdom is the intangibles. to satan is the glory of this world but remember the world glory is like the flowers of the field which are here today but vanish the next.
to satan be the seen and temporal. to god be the unseen and eternal.
whom do we choose to serve? what do we want?
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you,[d] Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”[e]
jesus command satan to flee from him and jesus resolves to worship only Lord and serve only the lord.
this should be our response too. first we should command satan to flee from us and stop pestering us. then we should make a decision in our heart and mind to serve and worhsip god only.
amen.
this is what i learn from god's word today:
our identity in christ
god's love and provision for us
choose to worship and serve god only
amen.
